- Michael Edwards departed as CEO of football for FSG, ending his second spell at Liverpool after more than 15 years across two stints (2011-2022, then from March 2024).
- FSG called Edwards' exit a "planned transition" following the completion of "key strategic priorities," including Liverpool's historic 20th English league title in 2025.
- Arne Slot was appointed by Edwards in June 2024 and led Liverpool to that 20th Premier League title, but was replaced by Andoni Iraola in early June after a below-par second season.
- The departure comes ahead of the 2026/27 campaign and a summer transfer window in which replacing Mohamed Salah is described as "one of the biggest tasks."
- Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is also reportedly on the move, which would further shake up the club hierarchy.
- Edwards said FSG's broader football project "evolved differently than originally envisaged," thanking owners Mike Gordon, John W. Henry and Tom Werner in his own statement.
Why it matters: Edwards was the architect behind Liverpool's 2019/20 title squad and oversaw the 2024/25 title under Slot, so his exit removes a continuity figure at the precise moment the club must replace Salah and may also lose sporting director Richard Hughes. FSG's "planned transition" framing softens the optics, but Edwards' own admission that the wider FSG football project "evolved differently" hints at unresolved strategic friction at the top of Liverpool's football operation.
