- Carbon Brief organized its 11th annual climate quiz on 18 Mar 2026, hosted by Octopus Energy in London.
- 300 participants formed 39 teams (25 in‑person, 14 via Zoom) and tackled five rounds of climate‑related questions.
- Emissions Impossible, the CEEW team from India, won with 76 points, the highest score of the event.
- Potato‑sized nodules, a mixed journalist team from New Scientist, The Times and Business Green, tied for second place with 59 points.
- You cannot BSEERious, a UCL Bartlett School team, also secured second place with 59 points.
- BBC earned a certificate for the best team name, “High hopes [low confidence],” voted by Carbon Brief staff.
- Picture round two was the toughest, averaging 5.9/20; no team identified the Chris Funk quote, while the general‑knowledge round averaged 13.8/20 correct answers.
Why it matters: The quiz’s results expose knowledge gaps – picture‑round and science scores averaged under 6 points – signalling to climate communicators and policymakers where public understanding is weakest and where targeted education could improve discourse. The event also showcases the breadth of expertise across NGOs, academia, media and government, reinforcing the value of cross‑sector collaboration in tackling climate challenges.
