- Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment are re-releasing 'The Passion of the Christ' in a newly remastered 4K version with Dolby Atmos sound from Sept. 10 through Sept. 17, with ticket buyers receiving a sneak peek at 'The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One.'
- 'The Resurrection of the Christ' has been split into two films — Part One opens May 6, 2027, and Part Two on May 25, 2028 — with both installments releasing on the Christian holiday Ascension Day.
- Jaakko Ohtonen and Mariela Garriga replace Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci as Jesus and Mary Magdalene, joined by Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Rupert Everett in the sequel cast.
- The 2004 original earned $610 million globally against a $30 million production budget and held the R-rated domestic box office record at $370 million until Disney's 'Deadpool & Wolverine' surpassed it with $636 million in 2024.
- Cedar Hill and Mike Ilitch Jr. Productions are executive producers and investors in the sequel, which Lionsgate describes as 'the largest faith film ever brought to the screen' and Gibson's 'most ambitious filmmaking achievement.'
- Mel Gibson returned to studio directing last year with Lionsgate's 'Flight Risk,' which grossed just $48 million globally, ending an eight-year absence from major studio projects.
Why it matters: The 4K re-release of a 20-year-old film that earned $610 million globally on a $30 million budget now previews what Lionsgate calls 'the largest faith film ever brought to the screen' — arriving as Gibson's most recent directorial effort 'Flight Risk' managed just $48 million worldwide.
