- Russia launched a massive overnight strike on Kyiv and surrounding regions, firing about 600 drones and 90 missiles, according to Ukraine’s air force.
- Ukraine reported four civilian deaths and roughly 100 injuries, with damage to residential buildings, a school, an opera house and a museum.
- Russia’s defence ministry claimed the Oreshnik hypersonic missile was used, framing the attack as retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on civilian infrastructure, a claim Kyiv denies.
- European leaders – French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper – condemned the strike and the use of the Oreshnik missile.
Why it matters: Ukrainian civilians bear the brunt, with deaths and infrastructure damage, while Moscow’s use of the Oreshnik missile escalates diplomatic pressure, prompting EU condemnation and tightening Western resolve to support Kyiv.
