- BYD launched the Dolphin G DM-i plug-in hatch, its first model designed specifically for Europe, offering up to 65 miles of pure-electric range and 646 miles of combined range.
- The Dolphin G DM-i starts at about $32,000, priced at £23,990 base in the UK and €18,990 in Germany after a €4,500 government incentive and €5,500 BYD E-Bonus discount (€28,990 without incentives).
- BYD's Super Hybrid system pairs a 1.5-liter gas engine with two electric motors; Boost, Comfort, and Sport trims use an 18.3 kWh Blade Battery with 6.6 kW AC charging and 39 kW DC fast charging (10–80% in 26 minutes).
- BYD claims the Dolphin G achieves weighted fuel consumption as low as 201.7 mpg with the battery charged and CO2 emissions as low as 32g/km, against 60g/km for the Active trim.
- The Comfort trim adds Google Maps and Google app integration on a 12.8-inch screen, while all trims include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and an 8.8-inch driver display.
- At 4,160 mm long, the Dolphin G DM-i is positioned as the smallest PHEV on sale in the UK, going up against B-segment superminis like the Toyota Yaris that rely on traditional hybrid systems.
- Front-mounted electric motor produces 161 hp (120 kW) and 210 Nm of torque, delivering 0–62 mph in 8.3 seconds across all trims.
Why it matters: BYD is landing a full plug-in hybrid in Europe's sub-€20,000 supermini segment — territory dominated by traditional hybrids like the Toyota Yaris — with 65 miles of EV-only range that covers most daily commutes without firing the gas engine. The aggressive German pricing after incentives undercuts established B-segment rivals, and the September delivery start marks the first time BYD has brought a Europe-specific model to market.
