Zambia tenders 300 MW of solar

Why it matters: Zambia aims to add 300 MW of solar power, backed by Norway, with expressions of interest due by May 31.
- Zambia's government is tendering 300 MW of new solar capacity through its Carbon Feed In Premium Program (CFIP), open to national and international independent power producers, and ZESCO.
- Eligible solar projects must have capacities between 30 MW and 100 MW and include at least 30 minutes of on-site battery energy storage.
- Norway is providing funding for the CFIP, paying for verified emissions reductions generated by the projects.
- ZESCO will act as the primary offtaker for power purchase agreements and recently completed the 100 MW Chisamba solar farm, with plans for an additional 100 MW at the site and another 100 MW project underway.
- The Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA) reports Zambia currently has 912.4 MW of operational solar across 142 projects.
Zambia has launched its Carbon Feed In Premium Program (CFIP), inviting national and international independent power producers, along with ZESCO, to tender for 300 MW of new grid-connected solar projects, each requiring on-site battery storage. This initiative, funded by Norway, aims to significantly boost Zambia's solar capacity, which currently stands at 912.4 MW across 142 projects, including ZESCO's recently completed 100 MW Chisamba solar farm.
