- UT Health San Antonio researchers analyzed 402 San Antonio adults (52% Hispanic, mean age 57.9, 58.5% women) and found midlife physical activity and healthy fasting blood glucose linked to slower cognitive decline in later life.
- The findings diverged sharply by ethnicity: physical activity was particularly tied to slower decline among Mexican American participants, while fasting blood glucose readings of ≤126 mg/dL were linked to slower decline among non-Hispanic white participants.
- First author Janette Vazquez, PhD said any level of physical activity and potentially maintaining optimal fasting glucose in midlife were 'associated with a significantly slower rate of cognitive decline in late life.'
- The study, co-led by Claudia Satizabal, PhD and Chen-Pin Wang, PhD, applied the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7 framework and was published July 23 in Alzheimer's & Dementia: Behavior & Socioeconomics of Aging.
- The team noted Hispanic adults aged 65+ have Alzheimer's at roughly 14%, versus 10% for non-Hispanic white older adults, and cited recent estimates that nearly 40% of Alzheimer's cases may trace to modifiable risk factors.
- The cohort built on the landmark San Antonio Heart Study (1979–2000s, more than 5,000 participants) and its follow-up SALSA; participants are now being invited into the new San Antonio Heart and Mind Study (SAHMS) at the Glenn Biggs Institute.
Why it matters: With 6.7 million Americans currently living with Alzheimer's and Hispanic older adults facing disproportionately higher prevalence (~14% vs ~10%), this San Antonio cohort provides ethnicity-specific evidence that two cheap midlife behaviors — exercise and blood sugar control — could meaningfully shift late-life dementia risk if the findings replicate in larger samples.
