- Scheffler posted a 2-under 68 in the opening round and a 72 on Friday at The Renaissance Club, leaving him at even par with the projected cut at 2 under, ending a streak of 78 consecutive cuts made.
- Scheffler last missed a cut at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August 2022; his consecutive-cuts streak was 51 starts longer than the next closest golfer, Matt Fitzpatrick.
- Scheffler hit only 11 of 26 fairways and 23 of 36 greens over two rounds, losing nearly two strokes on approach, and told reporters: "I got off to a poor start and didn't really hit it close enough to give myself a bunch of looks."
- Scheffler hasn't won on tour since his season-opening American Express start, though he has nine top-10s and four runner-up finishes, including a tie for fourth at last month's U.S. Open and a Monday playoff loss to Viktor Hovland at the Travelers Championship.
- Scheffler captured his fourth major at the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush and is the favorite to defend next week at Royal Birkdale, where he has never played and where no golfer has successfully defended the title since Padraig Harrington in 2008-09.
- The missed cut gives Scheffler extra practice time at Royal Birkdale; he noted the schedule is "a little different now with some of the signature events not having cuts."
Why it matters: A Scheffler missed cut is rare enough that his streak — 51 starts longer than the next closest golfer's — frames how dominant his consistency has been since August 2022. The early exit hands him bonus practice rounds at a Royal Birkdale course he has never seen, just before defending an Open Championship no one has successfully retained in 16 years.
