- Brice Turang (2B, Brewers) is the biggest NL snub, ranking 7th in bWAR and 8th in fWAR with a 3.2 combo WAR — well ahead of voted-in starter Ozzie Albies at 2.0 — yet was passed over after fans picked Albies and players chose Luis Arraez as backup
- Justin Wrobleski (SP, Dodgers) is 10-2 with a 2.80 ERA and 2.9 combo WAR, a stronger first half than Paul Skenes (3.62 ERA, no wins in his last nine starts), but the players voted for Skenes and the league added Logan Webb despite a 5-6 record
- Willson Contreras (1B, Red Sox) posted the highest fWAR (2.8) among AL position players left off the roster, edging Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (.265, 4 HRs, 28th in OPS), who was voted a starter despite a sub-All-Star season
- Davis Martin (SP, White Sox) went 9-3 with a 3.08 ERA over 96 innings and 90 strikeouts but lost out to Michael Wacha (5-5, 3.31 ERA) on a pitching staff the article calls 'the most nondescript All-Star staff ever selected'
- Junior Caminero seized the AL starting third-base job from injured Jose Ramirez, reaching 25 home runs and vaulting into AL MVP contention at age 22 on his second All-Star team
- Aaron Judge and Mike Trout were both voted as starters but will likely miss the game due to rib and hamstring injuries respectively, joining a wave of stars including Cal Raleigh, Manny Machado, Francisco Lindor and Mookie Betts who are either hurt or slumping well below career norms
Why it matters: With Judge, Trout and Ramirez all missing and several other stars scuffling below .200 or on the IL, fans who bought tickets to Philadelphia's All-Star Game will see a roster the article calls 'one of the weakest you'll see' — though NL first-half standouts like Cristopher Sanchez, Jacob Misiorowski and Shohei Ohtani provide a counterweight, and the rookie class (Caminero, Kevin McGonigle, Travis Bazzana) hints at a generational shift in the AL.
