- Formula 1 is set to feature nine or 10 Sprint weekends in 2027, up from the current six per season, according to Sky Sports' understanding.
- Stefano Domenicali confirmed the expansion at Silverstone during a wide-ranging interview, saying the calendar revealing the increased Sprint count would come 'very, very soon.'
- The Sprint format — Friday qualifying followed by a Saturday 100km race ahead of the main Grand Prix — celebrated its five-year anniversary at the 2026 British Grand Prix, one of this season's six Sprint events.
- The Portuguese Grand Prix and Turkish Grand Prix are confirmed to return to the 2027 calendar.
- The Dutch Grand Prix drops off the schedule after 2026, while Barcelona will rotate with Belgium and next return in 2028.
- Silverstone's Friday turnout of 150,000 fans was cited by Domenicali as proof the Sprint format delivers the action promoters and fans want.
Why it matters: Expanding from six to nine or 10 Sprint weekends roughly doubles the share of race weekends where fans get Friday qualifying action and a Saturday 100km race, reshaping the rhythm of more than half of next season's calendar. Venues already hosting Sprints — like Silverstone, which drew 150,000 fans on Friday — stand to set the template, while the returning Portuguese and Turkish GPs get the format's attendance-driving boost.
