- Zee Entertainment Enterprises secured Indian broadcast and streaming rights to 39 FIFA events spanning 2026–2034, including the FIFA World Cup 2026, FIFA World Cup 2030, and FIFA Women's World Cup 2027, marking the first deal between Zee and FIFA.
- Coverage begins June 11 with the FIFA World Cup 2026 opener and will air across four newly launched linear channels — Unite8 Sports 1 and 1 HD in Hindi, Unite8 Sports 2 and 2 HD in English — plus the ZEE5 streaming platform.
- The deal follows a protracted negotiation in which FIFA initially sought $100 million for the 2026 and 2030 rights before revising to approximately $60 million; JioStar tabled $20 million and Sony withdrew from the process, with Zee stepping into the gap.
- Zee CEO Punit Goenka said football 'cuts across regions and demographics' and that the channel launches and rights investment 'reflect our clear belief in its long-term potential,' while FIFA chief business officer Romy Gai called India 'of strategic importance' due to a young, passionate audience.
- Beyond the senior World Cups, the portfolio includes U-17 and U-20 men's and women's World Cup cycles, FIFA Futsal men's and women's World Cups, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup through 2030, and documentary series tied to each property.
- Zee's existing Unite8 Sports lineup already carries cricket, kabaddi, badminton, wrestling, and combat sports, with the 2026 World Cup serving as the company's biggest early test of a football-led growth strategy in a cricket-dominated market.
Why it matters: Zee fills a vacuum left by Sony's exit and JioStar's $20M lowball, committing to a nine-year, multi-tournament deal plus four new dedicated sports channels in a market historically dominated by cricket. The 2026 World Cup is the immediate proving ground: if football draws, Zee's bet on long-term potential could reshape India's sports-rights landscape; if not, the channel investment carries real risk.
