Study finds three midlife health factors that could delay dementia for 13 years

- NYU Langone Health researchers analyzed ARIC study data on 12,409 dementia-free adults with an average age of 56, followed for about 26 years, and found those without high blood pressure, diabetes, or smoking averaged 30.1 years dementia-free versus roughly 17 years for those with all three.
- The study, published in the journal Neurology, recorded 3,008 dementia cases and 5,238 deaths without dementia during follow-up, with each additional risk factor progressively shaving years off dementia-free life: 26.3 years with one factor, 21 years with two, ~17 years with all three.
- Findings also showed women lived longer without dementia than men regardless of risk-factor count, and white participants had more dementia-free years than Black participants — disparities the headline framing leaves undiscussed.
- Dr. Josef Coresh, director of NYU Langone's Optimal Aging Institute and senior investigator, urged people to actively avert vascular risk factors from age 45 as a strategy for preserving brain health for more than a decade.
- Global dementia cases are forecast to nearly triple to 153 million by 2050, though experts believe almost half of cases worldwide could be prevented or delayed by addressing modifiable risk factors, including the 14 previously identified.
- Dr. Jacqui Hanley of Alzheimer's Research UK, who was not involved in the research, said the study reframes prevention around years lived free of dementia rather than just the probability of developing it, reinforcing that cardiovascular and brain health are tightly linked.
