Hundreds of Claude Chats Found in Google Search

- Reddit users uncovered over 200 Claude AI conversations spread across at least 25 pages of Google search results, some from just weeks ago, including chats containing users' names, contact details, work history, and what appeared to be proprietary healthcare research
- Anthropic said shared conversation links are 'not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them,' but the share-flow warns only that 'anyone with the link' may view content—not that the link could surface in Google results
- Search engines including Google, Bing, Brave, and DuckDuckGo had indexed the shared Claude chats; Anthropic blocked the chat log links from further search indexing over the weekend, though many had already been saved and shared widely online
- Google told the BBC it does not control 'what pages are made public on the web' and that site owners—not Google—decide whether pages are crawled or indexed
- OpenAI's ChatGPT and Grok on X both experienced near-identical incidents last year, with OpenAI ultimately changing how easily shared logs were accessible and hundreds of thousands of Grok chats becoming publicly searchable
- One exposed April conversation showed a user prompting Claude to draft an unpublished blog post about cloud security with details of a corporate project, while another user asked Claude last month how to 'become Nine-tailed fox'
Why it matters: Anthropic's share button told users 'anyone with the link' could view a chat, not that the link could end up in Google—meaning users who believed they were sharing privately instead broadcasted CVs, corporate project notes, and healthcare transcripts to anyone searching for them, mirroring ChatGPT's 2024 incident but without a comparable product fix.
