- Bank of Montreal will reorganize its international capital markets business under a single leadership structure, according to a memo from capital markets CEO Alan Tannenbaum
- Richard Couzens will become head of international capital markets on November 1, expanding his current role as head of BMO's Europe, Middle East and Africa operations
- Chris Taves will step down as Asia head on January 31, 2027, ending an 18-year run at the bank — he joined BMO in 2009 and was appointed Asia head in January 2024
- Taves will work with Couzens in Q1 2027 to support the Asia team alongside Glenn Anson, Asia head of global markets, and Lisa Xia, BMO's China head
- BMO was the first Canadian bank to incorporate in China, a legacy position that the consolidated structure will now oversee through Xia's China role
Why it matters: The consolidation places Couzens in charge of BMO's full international footprint — EMEA, Asia, and China — just as Canadian banks expand abroad. The handoff runs from November 1 through Q1 2027, with Taves bridging the transition alongside Anson and Xia to keep client relationships intact.
