- "Satluj" began streaming globally on ZEE5 Global on July 3, fully uncut, three years after first running into trouble with India's Central Board of Film Certification
- Director Honey Trehan's drama stars Diljit Dosanjh, Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky, and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, and is inspired by human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra's decades-long pursuit of justice for 25,000+ people who disappeared during Punjab's insurgency-era crackdowns
- Originally titled "Ghallughara," the CBFC cleared the film for certification only with 21 cuts and a mandated title change to "Punjab '95"; producer RSVP appealed the ruling in Bombay High Court
- Around the same time, the film was withdrawn from its planned 2023 Toronto International Film Festival gala premiere, with Variety reporting that political factors were involved in that decision
- Trehan said the final title "Satluj" was the only one they could secure and that the film appears "in its original form as we always intended," crediting "Diljit paji" and producers for refusing to endorse a compromised version
- RSVP and MacGuffin Pictures produced the film, with Ronnie Screwvala among producers; ZEE5 Americas head Harish Goyal and Hindi content head Kaveri Das emphasized the platform's commitment to standing behind the film with conviction
Why it matters: The uncut global release resolves a three-year standoff in which the CBFC had demanded 21 cuts and a title change from the original 'Ghallughara,' a term referencing historic Sikh massacres. By streaming the film as its creators intended, ZEE5 is positioning itself as a home for politically sensitive South Asian cinema while giving the Khalra story — concerning 25,000+ enforced disappearances — its first uncompromised audience.
