China runs naval, air drills near Scarborough Shoal

- PLA Southern Theater Command announced on Aug. 1 that it had conducted joint air and naval combat drills around Scarborough Shoal, framing the exercise as a test of combat readiness.
- The drills were held in the airspace and territorial waters surrounding the feature, which Beijing calls Huangyan Dao.
- Scarborough Shoal is also claimed by the Philippines as Bajo de Masinloc, though China did not name Manila when accusing "certain countries" of undermining regional stability.
- China described the exercise as a "necessary response" to those unnamed parties and stated the goal was to defend national territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.
Why it matters: China's choice to drill at Scarborough Shoal — also claimed by the Philippines — while blasting unnamed "certain countries" leaves Manila as the implicit target without Beijing naming it directly. The Philippines, an active claimant of the feature, now faces continued military pressure in a specific bilateral flashpoint.
