- Google Photos launched "Video Remix," an AI feature that edits and transforms videos in seconds, accessible via the app's Create tab.
- Video Remix is powered by Gemini Omni, Google's model that promises to "create anything from any input," and offers cinematic relighting, background swaps, and artistic styles including watercolor, raw sketchbook, and oil painting.
- Video Remix rolls out starting Wednesday to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. and 13 other markets: Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, and Turkey.
- Google framed the launch as its latest move to embed generative AI into consumer apps, positioning it against Apple, OpenAI, and Adobe by replacing dedicated editing software with in-app tools.
- Google Photos has received a string of recent AI updates beyond Video Remix, including touch-up tools for blemishes, skin texture, eye brightening, and teeth whitening, plus a digital closet feature that turns clothing photos into virtual try-on outfit ideas.
- Google's blog post stated the tool's thesis directly: "Creating beautiful video clips shouldn't require professional skills or hours of editing," targeting casual users rather than professional editors.
Why it matters: Google is locking casual creators into its ecosystem by bundling video editing into a free app they already use — but access is gated behind a paid AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscription, meaning the feature widens the gap between paying Google AI subscribers and free Photos users in 14 launch countries.
