- FIFA opened an investigation into alleged racist abuse of American influencer IShowSpeed (Darren Jason Watkins Jr, 21) during Argentina's 3-2 win over Cape Verde on 3 July at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, a last-32 fixture
- IShowSpeed, who has 57 million YouTube subscribers and 53 million TikTok followers, was wearing a Cape Verde kit and confronting an Argentina fan in the stands when the alleged incident occurred, according to footage on his YouTube channel
- FIFA said it was made aware of the incident and "immediately initiated an investigation," declaring the World Cup "a celebration of unity, diversity and respect" and warning that abusers "are not welcome in our game"
- IShowSpeed live-streamed matches during the tournament, with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and ex-Barcelona and AC Milan forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic appearing in some of his broadcasts
- Kylian Mbappe labelled Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla's racist remarks about him "despicable" and "unworthy of her position" after France's last-16 victory over Paraguay, days before the IShowSpeed incident
- The French Football Federation announced plans to file criminal charges against Amarilla of Paraguay's Liberal Radical Party, describing her remarks as "utterly abhorrent and unacceptable"
Why it matters: Two racism controversies in the same week of World Cup knockout play — one involving a 110-million-follower livestreamer and the other a sitting senator — have triggered separate FIFA investigations and a planned criminal complaint. For FIFA, any ruling now carries audience reach and reputational stakes far beyond the stadium, testing whether its stated commitment to "unity, diversity and respect" translates into concrete action.
