- Neoen unveiled two BESS projects totaling 348 MW during the Franco-Japanese Economic Forum in Tokyo, coinciding with French President Emmanuel Macron's official visit, with a 248 MW project in France and a 100 MW project in Japan.
- The French project in Vernou-la-Celle-sur-Seine (Seine-et-Marne) will deliver 248 MW/496 MWh, making it France's largest battery and the first to connect to RTE's 400 kV transmission network; construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2026 with commissioning in 2028, subject to additional environmental studies.
- Nidec will supply battery units from its La Fouillouse facility near Saint-Étienne and provide 20 years of maintenance for the French project, marking the 12th battery collaboration between the two companies.
- The Ako Battery project in Japan's Hyogo prefecture will be Neoen's first investment in Japan at 100 MW/400 MWh, with construction set to begin in the coming months and commissioning targeted for 2028.
- For the Japan project, Neoen is partnering with France's Equans and Japan's Toho, and signed a grid connection agreement with Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) in January 2026.
- Brookfield subsidiary Neoen holds a global battery portfolio of 2.8 GW and 8.1 GWh in operation or under construction across Australia, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, Sweden, and El Salvador, with a target of installing an additional 10 GW by 2030.
Why it matters: The 248 MW French project will be France's largest battery and the first to connect to RTE's 400 kV transmission network — a technical milestone for grid-scale storage in the country. The Japan project marks Neoen's first investment in that market, and the combined 348 MW push advances the company's 10 GW-by-2030 expansion target across seven countries.
