Claude Shared Chats Indexed by Google Search

- Reddit users discovered that Claude shared chats and Artifacts became publicly searchable via Google's "site:claude.ai/share" operator, surfacing health records, private company documents, and the names and phone numbers of children.
- Anthropic said share links only appear in search when posted somewhere visible to search engines, with spokesperson Amie Rotherham stating the company doesn't share chat directories or sitemaps with Google and that privately sent links stay out of search.
- Google spokesperson Ned Adriance said the company "respects" site owners' crawling and indexing directives, adding that "these pages were indexed across many search engines" — pointing beyond Google alone.
- Futurism reported finding a real patient's detailed medical report, clinical trial results with patient names, documents sharing the names and phone numbers of primary school children, internal company documents, and employee reviews with personal information.
- Fortune reported one exposed chat labeled "shared by Anthropic" showed Claude producing erotica, content prohibited under Anthropic's own usage policy; it remains unclear how the material was generated.
- By Monday afternoon, the same "site:claude.ai/share" Google query returned no results, suggesting the indexing had been remediated.
Why it matters: This is at least the second time Anthropic's share feature has spilled user conversations into search results — Google estimated ~600 were indexed in a similar 2024 episode — and Anthropic's response again puts the burden on users to know that "anyone with the link" can become "anyone on the internet," leaving the feature unchanged.
