China’s giant Gobi solar plant runs after dark on salt, not batteries

- China Three Gorges Corporation put its 1-gigawatt Hami solar-plus-storage hybrid in Xinjiang's Gobi Desert into commercial trial operation July 1, unseating Dubai's 950 MW Noor Energy 1 as the world's largest CSP-PV hybrid.
- The Hami project pairs 900 MW of standard solar panels with a 100 MW concentrated solar power unit — 260,000 tracking mirrors across 800,000 square meters heat molten salt to 550°C, then spin a steam turbine for up to eight hours after dark.
- Niu Jianle, CTG's project director, drew a sharp distinction between lithium batteries' "short-duration peak shaving" and CSP's "large capacity, long discharge cycles and zero operational emissions," calling the milestone "a landmark leap" to commercial scale.
- Built in Xinjiang's Gobi Desert at the southern foot of the Tianshan mountains for CNY 3.53 billion (~$480 million), the 1,817-hectare complex is projected to generate 2.07 TWh annually, power roughly 830,000 households, and cut 1.63 million tons of CO2 per year.
- China Energy Engineering Corp has broken ground on a separate 1.5 GW hybrid nearby (1.3 GW PV plus 150 MW CSP), while CTG plans a Phase 2 expansion of Hami to 3 GW — collectively industrializing molten-salt storage at a scale most of the world has written off.
- The commercial test for molten-salt CSP is cost: historically more expensive per kWh than PV-plus-lithium even as lithium prices keep falling, making the July 1 milestone a demonstration rather than a guaranteed template.
Why it matters: China Three Gorges has committed roughly $480 million to molten-salt storage as most of the world treats CSP as uneconomical, with CTG and China Energy Engineering Corp jointly planning 4.5 GW of thermal-storage hybrids in Xinjiang. The test is whether years of real-world operation can close the per-kWh gap with PV-plus-lithium as battery prices keep falling.
