- Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex (MDSCC) in Robledo de Chavela was overrun by a wildfire that intensified on July 24, prompting evacuation of surrounding areas and the entire staff of the facility
- Isabel Díaz Ayuso, Madrid's regional president, called the blaze "the worst fire in the history of the region," while NASA confirmed all MDSCC employees evacuated safely and that antenna damage will be assessed once it is safe
- NASA's Deep Space Network relies on three antenna complexes in California, Spain, and Australia, each covering roughly a third of the sky, so losing the Spanish site creates communication windows when deep-space craft are out of touch — a problem Paul Byrne of Washington University in Missouri flagged as especially acute for distant probes like Voyager 1 and 2
- The Deep Space Network is already "drastically oversubscribed," slowing the flow of commands and data, and demand is set to climb with the Artemis lunar program ramping up — potentially severe enough that some mission data "will never make it back to Earth"
- NASA has temporarily shifted mission operations to the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex in California, a workaround Byrne called "a temporary bandage" with inevitable effects on spacecraft if MDSCC sustained real damage
- Wildfires have been burning across Europe all month, driven by a heat wave and intense droughts that fueled the July 24 escalation near Madrid
Why it matters: Three DSN complexes each cover only a third of the sky, so the Spanish site's loss creates specific hours when deep-space probes — including Voyager 1 and 2 — cannot be reached at all. NASA's already oversubscribed network was heading into an Artemis-driven demand spike, meaning the Goldstone workaround buys continuity but not full sky coverage, and the longer the Spanish dishes stay offline, the more likely real mission data goes missing.
