- Barisan Nasional (BN) announced it will contest all 56 seats in Johor’s upcoming state election, as stated by Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi on May 16.
- Barisan Nasional (BN) said the decision is a “clear offer” to voters to continue a stable, strong government and serve Johor’s development and welfare, per Onn Hafiz’s Facebook post.
- Barisan Nasional (BN) – through its United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) leaders – is pushing for an early Johor poll as soon as August or September, with party machinery already activated for a potential vote in the latter half of the year.
- Barisan Nasional (BN) is also eyeing an early state election in Melaka, another BN‑controlled state whose election is due by early 2027.
- Barisan Nasional (BN) will not cooperate with other political pacts in Johor, including Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Harapan (PH), Perikatan Nasional (PN), or Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA).
- Barisan Nasional (BN) includes smaller parties such as the Malaysian Chinese Association and the Malaysian Indian Congress alongside its lynchpin party UMNO.
- Barisan Nasional (BN) aims to rebuild momentum independently of the federal unity government by winning early state polls, strengthening its position ahead of the general election due by early 2028, political analysts say.
Why it matters: BN stands to gain early electoral momentum and a stronger bargaining position before the 2028 general election, while its rivals—Pakatan Harapan and other opposition groups—risk losing ground due to lower turnout in a standalone Johor poll and may see reduced influence in the state’s political landscape.
