- US issued executive orders on Tuesday banning imports of whey, cane molasses, non-alcoholic beer, wine, rum, vodka, malt beer, motorbikes and mopeds from 29 September.
- White House said Canada discriminates against US businesses by restricting American goods while applying fewer restrictions to the same products from other countries.
- Canada imposed dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on US steel, clothing and furniture, which took effect just after midnight on Tuesday.
- US imposed 50% tariffs on around $20bn of Canadian goods last month, affecting sectors including furniture, wine, sporting equipment and fishing equipment.
- Carney said Canada’s economic pivot away from the US will come at a cost, adding that the cost of action is lower than the cost of standing still.
- Bombardier was warned that it could no longer sell its products in the US unless it moves manufacturing there.
Why it matters: The direct burden falls on Canadian exporters and US buyers: the ban covers products from whey and spirits to mopeds, while a 50% tariff on around $20bn of Canadian goods and Canada’s dollar-for-dollar duties have already taken effect. More than two-thirds of Canadian exports go to the US.
