- Meta's Superintelligence Labs launched Muse Image, the division's first AI image generation model, now powering image-making tools across the Meta AI app, Instagram, and WhatsApp, with Facebook and Messenger coming soon.
- Alexandr Wang, who was hired to lead Superintelligence Labs last year, described Muse Image as "agentic" on Threads, saying it works with the Muse Spark large language model to reason through prompts, search the web, and plan before generating.
- Users can @ mention other Instagram accounts in prompts, allowing Muse Image to incorporate their likeness — Meta says "tagging a username lets Meta AI use public photos to build a visual," though users can control how their content is reused.
- Muse Image supports room redesigns sourced from Facebook Marketplace or other web images, direct photo editing by drawing on top of images, and design generation for invitations and postcards.
- The model will power 30 new AI effects rolling out to Instagram Stories in the US before expanding to other countries and additional areas of Meta's apps.
- Muse Video is the next planned model in the lineup; Wang teased it on Threads as "competitive on prompt adherence, visual fidelity, temporal consistency."
Why it matters: Muse Image is the first model from Superintelligence Labs and replaces Meta's Llama lineup, marking a strategic shift to in-house generative media under the division Wang was hired to lead. The @ mention feature that pulls public Instagram photos into AI outputs creates an immediate consent question — Meta's only stated safeguard is that users can opt to control reuse of their content.
