- Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie alongside producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (of Transformers fame) and CD Projekt Red, though no story, release date, or casting has been announced.
- CD Projekt Red joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski called Paramount a "future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise" in a statement.
- Cyberpunk 2077, the dystopian RPG that stars Keanu Reeves as terrorist Johnny Silverhand, has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide despite its troubled 2020 launch.
- The game's 2023 expansion Phantom Liberty, which stars Idris Elba, has sold more than 15 million copies, while the Cyberpunk animated series Edgerunners is set to premiere its second Netflix season later this month.
- The Cyberpunk film joins a broader pipeline of video-game adaptations that have delivered roughly $1bn each at the global box office for Super Mario, Minecraft, and Sonic the Hedgehog, plus HBO's The Last of Us and Prime Video's Fallout.
Why it matters: Paramount's bet on Cyberpunk 2077 — a game with 40 million copies sold and an ongoing animated series on Netflix — comes just after Paramount Skydance completed its $110bn merger with Warner Bros Discovery and pledged 30 films a year, putting the studio in direct competition with Xbox's newly announced "XP" game-to-screen licensing division for a share of the lucrative game-adaptation market.
