Meta's Muse Image Uses Public Instagram Photos for AI

- Muse Image, Meta's first image-focused model from its Superintelligence Labs, lets users @-mention public Instagram accounts in the Meta AI app to pull those profiles into AI-generated visuals, with the feature enabled by default.
- The model is being embedded into WhatsApp and Instagram — powering AI effects for Instagram Stories and image generation in direct chats with Meta AI on WhatsApp — and is rolling out in limited countries first, with expansion planned to Facebook, Messenger, and Meta Advantage+ creative for advertisers.
- Instagram users will not be notified when their images are remixed using AI, though Meta's existing notifications for traditional reuse (remixes, sequences, stickers, templates) continue.
- For under-18 users with public accounts, only their followers can reuse the media, and only if the account's settings allow it.
- Switching to a private account deletes reels, posts, and stories that use the user's content only after the account has been private for more than 24 hours, and content already created by others using AI features is not deleted.
- Users can opt out via Instagram's Sharing and reuse settings, but content created before disabling the feature remains, and Meta's help docs warn that reused content may surface in search engine results.
- The rollout comes as Google recently added a Search Services History option that uses saved media — images, files, audio, video — to develop and improve its AI models for signed-in users, reflecting a broader opt-out-by-default trend across the industry.
Why it matters: Public Instagram creators are now raw material for AI imagery by default, and the absence of remix notifications means most will never know their photos are being repurposed. The opt-out switch protects future use but not what's already been generated — and Meta's own help docs acknowledge that reused content may surface in search results.
