Study: All 11 Kids' Shirts Tested Exceeded Lead Limits

- Kamila Deavers, a chemistry professor at Marian University, led the project after her own daughter briefly showed elevated lead levels linked to toy coatings; undergraduates Cristina Avello and Priscila Espinoza joined to examine fast-fashion health effects.
- Simulated stomach-condition experiments suggested that even brief mouthing, sucking or chewing on contaminated fabric could expose children to lead above the FDA's daily ingestion limit — a finding the researchers called likely conservative.
- The team plans follow-up testing on whether washing contaminated clothing transfers lead to other laundry items and leaves lead-containing residue inside washing machines that could leach into wastewater.
- Safer dye-fixing alternatives already exist, including natural mordants derived from oak bark, pomegranate peel and rosemary, plus alum, but Deavers noted switching the industry to those methods would require costly technology changes.
Why it matters: The sample was small — 11 shirts from four retailers — and the work is preliminary, but a 100% failure rate against the federal lead cap is hard to ignore. If the pattern holds in broader testing, fast-fashion brands and dye suppliers could face pressure to reform manufacturing, and parents of mouthing-age children gain a new reason to scrutinize brightly colored cheap clothing.
