- Anna Wintour, who has helmed Vogue for more than 30 years and become a pop icon in the process, appears on the magazine's cover alongside Meryl Streep, photographed by Annie Leibovitz.
- The cover lands ahead of The Devil Wears Prada 2, out in cinemas next month, in which Streep reprises Miranda Priestly — a brash, ruthless fashion-magazine editor thought to be based on Wintour.
- In an interview conducted by Greta Gerwig (the Barbie director), Wintour called it "such an honour to be played by Meryl" but said the Priestly character was "distant" from her, calling the role an "extraordinary gift."
- Asked about swapping careers with Streep, Wintour said she has "no gifts" — she "can't sing, can't dance, can't act" — while insisting she feels "as alive, excited and aware as ever" about her age.
- Wintour previously told the New Yorker's David Remnick she attended the original 2006 premiere "wearing Prada, completely having no idea what the film was going to be about," agreed the portrayal was "a caricature," but said the film was "highly enjoyable" and "very funny."
- The original Devil Wears Prada was based on a novel by Lauren Weisberger, a former Wintour assistant at Vogue, and starred Anne Hathaway as an aspiring reporter who becomes a lackey to the ice-cold editor of the fictional Runway magazine.
- A genealogy report by Ancestry claims Wintour and Streep are sixth cousins.
Why it matters: The cover lands just before The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits cinemas next month, letting Wintour publicly frame the Streep portrayal on her own terms inside her own magazine. The Ancestry finding that the two are sixth cousins turns what would have been a routine promotional alignment into a personal story for Vogue's editorial director.
