Meteomatics' Meteobase automates drone weather research

- Meteomatics developed Meteobase, an automated ground station that launches and recovers a drone on pre-programmed flights to collect weather data at different altitudes.
- The Meteobase drone returns to its base to recharge and download data, which the station then transmits to researchers without manual recovery.
- The base is weather-resistant, keeps the drone at a comfortable temperature, and can dispatch one daily mission or multiple flights to track fast-changing conditions like fog, icing, or an advancing weather front.
- Traditional weather balloons have been launched thousands of times daily since the 1930s, but drift wherever the wind takes them and consume irreplaceable helium.
- The atmosphere's boundary layer — ground level to a few thousand metres — is difficult to study because weather stations sit too low and research aircraft are too expensive to deploy routinely.
Why it matters: For meteorologists and forecast users, the automated drone system offers a reusable replacement for the thousands of daily helium balloon launches — eliminating helium dependence and unsteerable drift, and enabling targeted sampling of fast-changing conditions like fog, icing, and advancing weather fronts.
