- PM Modi landed in Jakarta on July 6, 2026, beginning a three-nation tour (Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand) aimed at further strengthening India's Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision and commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
- Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto personally received Modi at the airport alongside four ministers, according him a traditional ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour — a diplomatic gesture Modi said 'touched' him.
- The visit is Modi's first bilateral trip to Indonesia since India and Indonesia elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018, which Modi said 'has benefitted our people.'
- Modi announced he and Prabowo will visit the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta — Indonesia's largest Hindu temple, roughly 17 km northeast of the city — to deepen cultural linkages, and Modi will also interact with the Indian community.
- The tour reciprocates President Prabowo's January 2025 State visit to India, when he served as chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations.
- From Jakarta, Modi travels to Melbourne at Australian PM Anthony Albanese's invitation, then to Auckland at New Zealand PM Christopher Luxon's invitation.
Why it matters: This is Modi's first bilateral Indonesia visit since the 2018 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership elevation and the opening leg of a tour that also takes him to Melbourne and Auckland. The personal airport greeting by Prabowo plus the planned joint visit to Prambanan Temple moves beyond a standard diplomatic handshake, signaling that India is investing in cultural and ceremonial depth alongside its Act East policy goals.
