Ukraine Mass-Produces Armed Robots to Replace Infantry

- Ukraine began mass production of the Legit, a low-cost uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV) capable of carrying a machine gun, in May, and announced plans to replace a third of its infantry with UGVs in one sector.
- Ukrainian military commander Mykola Zinkevych said a quad bike-sized UGV called DevDroid occupied a front-line position for 45 days, fighting off Russian troops solo with no soldiers present, returning only to change batteries and refill magazines.
- The Ukrainian military carried out the first ever robot-only assault in 2024 — two of the machines got stuck on obstacles, but the attack successfully took the Russian position, and one unit estimates robot assaults have saved it hundreds of casualties.
- President Volodymyr Zelensky announced in April plans to ramp up UGV production to 50,000 units in 2026, up from roughly half that figure in 2024, and Third Army Corps Commander Andriy Biletskyi said he hopes robots will make up 80% of the Ukrainian fighting force.
- The Legit robot costs only about $11,400, in part because it uses components originally designed for hoverboards, making it cheap enough to sacrifice in suicide attacks or expend in last-bullet defensive stands.
- Current wheeled and tracked UGVs are unsuited to urban terrain or going inside buildings, but the US military is experimenting with humanoid robots for breaching operations, and Elon Musk's Tesla is among makers who believe agile, AI-enabled humanoids could be mass-produced within two years.
Why it matters: Ukraine's outnumbered military is betting that cheap, expendable armed robots can absorb the risk that would otherwise fall on soldiers — a real-world test of whether the infantry-centric logic of warfare since the second world war can finally be broken. With 50,000 UGVs targeted for 2026 and a successful 45-day solo robot defense already logged, the front line is becoming a live laboratory whose results may push every major military to automate faster.
