- Anthropic is building a watermark detection API, with implementation details still being finalized; the method can only assign a probability that Claude was involved, not confirm authorship or distinguish Claude from other watermarked AIs.
Why it matters: Around 190 signatories to the EU Code of Practice are committing to mark AI-generated text by August 2, making Claude's rollout part of an industry-wide compliance wave. For Claude specifically, the watermark's weakness on code, factual passages, and lightly edited drafts — plus its inability to distinguish Claude from other watermarked AIs — means detection will only ever be probabilistic, leaving a gap between regulatory compliance and reliable provenance tracking.
