- Liam Neeson reacted to news of Meryl Streep voicing Aslan in the new Narnia film, calling her the best choice to play the Christ-like lion character.
- Meryl Streep is set to voice Aslan in Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, scheduled for a February 12 theatrical release.
- Greta Gerwig wrote and directed the new adaptation, stating she sought an actor over 70 with both gravitas and childlike wonder for the role of Aslan.
- The Magician’s Nephew, though sixth in publication order, is the chronological origin story of Narnia, depicting Aslan’s creation of the world a thousand years before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
- Meryl Streep was confirmed for the role of Aslan in April, as part of Gerwig’s planned Netflix adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series.
- Liam Neeson previously voiced Aslan in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008), and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).
Why it matters: Streep’s casting shifts a theologically symbolic role to a female actor, marking a bold interpretive turn in a beloved franchise; Neeson’s endorsement lends legitimacy to the transition, signaling continuity amid change for fans of the series.
