China hits 14 EU firms with export controls over Russia sanctions

- China's Commerce Ministry announced Friday it is adding 14 European entities to an export control list, banning Chinese companies from exporting dual-use items to them and barring foreign firms from re-exporting China-made dual-use goods to those entities.
- The EU adopted its 21st package of sanctions against Russia on Thursday, targeting banks, cryptocurrency companies, and military equipment manufacturers, and included 14 mainland Chinese and Hong Kong enterprises believed to supply Russia with dual-use goods and technology.
- The affected European companies include Czech vehicle maker Tatra Trucks, Italian electric motor maker Lafert SpA, German manufacturer Sindlhauser Materials GmbH, and French drone manufacturer Cavok UAS.
- A Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson said the measures were taken "to safeguard national security and interests" and called the EU's actions "egregious," framing the move as a non-proliferation and national security measure.
- The EU's sanctions package also targeted entities from India and Turkey — countries similarly believed to provide Russia with dual-use goods and technology — though China restricted its retaliation to European entities.
- The measures specifically bar the transfer of dual-use items, which the Commerce Ministry defined as goods usable for both civilian and military purposes, through any channel to the 14 named European organizations.
