Amazon's Alexa Plus adds smart home integrations via MCP

SkimNews Take
By adopting the open-source Model Context Protocol, Amazon sidesteps building bespoke integrations with each appliance maker, letting any compatible device plug in—making the expanding brand list a self-reinforcing asset rather than a manually maintained catalog.

- Amazon is rolling out an Alexa Plus update that integrates smart home devices from Bosch, Delta, Ecovacs, iRobot, Yale Home, Whirlpool, Tapo, and Eufy, automatically routing user requests to the correct device.
- Alexa Plus can interpret contextual commands — Amazon's example: a user saying "the tag says cold wash only" prompts the assistant to navigate a washer's cycle options and select the correct setting.
- The new integrations run on Amazon's new AI developer toolkit, designed to let device makers with capabilities "that weren't supported before" connect to Alexa Plus.
- Amazon widely launched the revamped Alexa Plus AI assistant in February; it currently performs tasks in only a limited set of third-party services including Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Uber, Thumbtack, Expedia, Yelp, Square, and Angi.
- Amazon is adopting the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard that lets AI models connect to external systems and tools.
- Canva, Headspace, Priceline, Lyft, Cengage, Virgin Atlantic, and Weekend are launching integrations later this year, with Priceline enabling users to browse hotels and book trips directly through Alexa Plus.
- Priceline, Atom Tickets, Cengage, Fandango, and Taskrabbit will support payments through Amazon Wallet, turning Alexa into a voice-driven checkout channel.
Why it matters: By adopting the open-source MCP standard, Amazon is broadening Alexa Plus from its limited February launch footprint (just Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Uber, and a handful of others) to a much wider device and service ecosystem — and pairing that with Amazon Wallet payments to create a direct voice-commerce channel. The move positions Alexa Plus as a platform play rather than a walled garden.
