- Instagram's AI Content labels are appearing on images users didn't create with generative AI tools — including photos edited with Canva's Background Remover or minor blemish-fixing tools, according to widespread user reports on Threads over recent weeks.
- Canva told content strategist Jess Bruno that some of its assistive AI tools "were being tagged as generative" and claimed to have fixed the tagging on its end, but some users report the erroneous labels persist and that images edited before the fix were never tagged.
- Meta scans for IPTC and C2PA metadata to flag AI content — a system it announced in February 2024 and which previously swept up photos whose Adobe metadata indicated even minor generative retouching; Meta has declined to clarify what signals it currently scans for.
- The Verge's testing found the only signal that definitively triggered Instagram's "AI Content" label was output from Meta's own generative AI systems — images edited with Canva, Photoshop, Adobe Firefly, Google Gemini's Nano Banana, and Apple Intelligence were not labeled, even when confirmed to include C2PA and SynthID signals.
- A new Instagram account set up with minimal information and used to post images in quick succession went untagged for nearly two weeks, escaping detection despite Meta's recent announced crackdowns on AI-generated accounts.
- About Face, a cosmetics brand founded by singer Halsey, had recent Instagram photos automatically labeled as AI after being taken on an iPhone and lightly edited, prompting the brand's social manager to publicly clarify that no AI tools were used.
Why it matters: The labeling system's failures cut both ways: ordinary creators face false stigma on legitimate photos, while the AI content Meta is supposedly trying to flag — including content from its own tools — passes through untouched, eroding the trust signal Meta built the feature to create.
