- Caffeinated coffee was the only condition associated with reduced anxiety, sharper attention and alertness, and a lower inflammation risk, showing caffeine carries its own distinct physiological signature
- Professor John Cryan, the study's corresponding author and APC principal investigator, argued that coffee 'is more than just caffeine' and could be 'harnessed as a further intervention as part of a healthy balanced diet'
Why it matters: With roughly 3-5 daily cups defined as a moderate intake, the study gives consumers and clinicians the first head-to-head evidence that decaf and regular coffee deliver separable gut and brain benefits, opening a path to targeted dietary recommendations rather than one-size-fits-all caffeine advice.
