Juno star tracker reveals Jupiter's hidden shadow side

- Using Jupiter itself as a "light bulb" during night-side flybys, the SRU produced Juno's highest-resolution image of Ganymede, revealing a mysterious streak of ejecta many kilometers from the Tros crater that scientists cannot yet explain — a puzzle Becker has flagged for the upcoming ESA JUICE mission.
- Becker was the first person to discover a new type of lightning on Jupiter's night-side cloud tops, illuminated by moonlight from Io, after waking instinctively at 2-3 AM California time to watch images arrive in real time.
- Becker transitioned from a career in dance and experimental theatre in New York to physics and optical sciences after a knee injury, inspired by viewing the Orion Nebula through a telescope at an amateur astronomy club in Connecticut.
Why it matters: A navigation instrument designed only to keep Juno oriented became one of the mission's most prolific discovery tools, producing the best images of Jupiter's rings, materially improving the geologic map of a region of Ganymede, and detecting previously unseen lightning. The open questions Becker surfaced — particularly the unexplained ejecta streak far from Tros crater — are now on JUICE's follow-up list, giving the next Jupiter mission a concrete scientific agenda handed off by Juno.
