- Godzilla Minus Zero took $6.7 million in previews and is projected to open at $30 million this weekend, ahead of the other new releases.
- Godzilla Minus One opened at $11.4 million three years ago, making the sequel’s projected debut more than double; the predecessor grossed $57 million domestically and $113 million globally.
- Takashi Yamazaki wrote and directed Godzilla Minus One, which became North America’s biggest live-action Japanese movie and won the visual-effects Oscar over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Napoleon and The Creator.
- IMAX marks a format-first for Godzilla Minus Zero: it is the first Japanese movie ever filmed for IMAX, as premium large formats expanded this year with help from The Odyssey.
- Toho produced Godzilla Minus Zero, while GKids distributed the sequel in the U.S.; the story is set two years after Minus One as Godzilla returns and a new monster arrives.
- The Cat in the Hat drew $1 million in previews and is projected to open at $20 million in second place; Ramayana: Rise of a Legend drew $3.5 million from Thursday and Wednesday previews and is projected to open at $6 million, while Wild Horse Nine drew $900,000 and is projected at $4 million to $7 million in limited release.
Why it matters: Godzilla Minus Zero puts Toho and GKids in front of the weekend’s other new films, with a projected $30 million opening versus $20 million for The Cat in the Hat, $6 million for Ramayana and $4 million to $7 million for Wild Horse Nine. The sequel’s projected debut is also more than double Godzilla Minus One’s $11.4 million opening.
