- River AI raised $1.1 billion in a seed/Series A round led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek participating — just two months after coming out of stealth in June.
- Igor Babuschkin, a former xAI co-founder with prior AI roles at DeepMind and OpenAI, is rebuilding the AI stack end-to-end — training, models, product layer, and hardware — to create personal "guardian angel" agents rather than human worker replacements.
- River AI offers an API billed per 1 million tokens that lets developers apply reinforcement learning and LoRA fine-tuning to open models, marketed as "an antidote to prompt engineering" since "prompting steers a model you don't own."
- River AI claims enterprises can complete a complex reinforcement learning run in 15 to 20 minutes with no infrastructure team required, at two to four times the cost savings versus closed-source alternatives.
- AMP PBC, the co-lead investor, is an AI-focused firm founded in 2026 by former Andreessen Horowitz general partner Anjney Midha, whose a16z portfolio included Black Forest Labs, Mistral AI, LMArena, and OpenRouter.
Why it matters: River AI's 15-minute RL runs and 2-4x cost savings pitch gives enterprises a concrete open-model alternative as open-weight adoption accelerates. The $1.1B bet on a two-month-old startup — backed by Nvidia and AMD — puts Babuschkin in direct competition with his former employer xAI's worker-replacement trajectory.
