- Ted Sarandos met with Indian PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday to unveil the Netflix India Storytelling Initiative, a multi-phase investment in India's creative talent pipeline.
- The initiative builds on a decade-plus Netflix presence in India — 200+ originals produced and 100+ locations shot — targeting careers in animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics, an area Netflix calls India's "Orange Economy."
- The first phase includes a partnership with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) to co-develop curricula in Visual Effects Mastery and Media Technology Workflows, plus 100 scholarships covering Interactive Comics, Character Animation, Virtual Art Department Content Creation, and E-Sports and Gaming Management.
- Netflix is also partnering with the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) to train audio description writers and voice talent, making films and series accessible to audiences with visual and hearing impairments.
- The initiative explicitly supports the Indian government's "Viksit Bharat @ 2047" ambitions, with Netflix citing the big-budget Indian Air Force series "Operation Safed Sagar" as proof of Indian creators' global-scale potential.
- Sarandos framed the move as the start of Netflix's "next decade" in India, saying: "investing in creators is investing in India's creative future."
Why it matters: The initiative commits Netflix to concrete skilling infrastructure — 100 funded IICT scholarships and formal curricula in VFX, gaming, and animation — while pairing with NFDC on accessibility training. For India's emerging creators, it creates government-aligned entry points into high-growth Orange Economy sectors; for Netflix, it locks in a policy-friendly footprint as it enters its second decade in the country.
