- Rwanda signed a 10-year deal to host F1's African Grand Prix from the "early 2030s," ending nearly 40 years without a grand prix on the continent after the last African race in South Africa in 1993.
- Stefano Domenicali called the deal a "landmark," praised Rwanda as "one of the world's great success stories," and said F1 would "bring the passion of F1 to 100 million people across Africa."
- Morocco and South Africa lost out in the bidding — Morocco never secured the requisite finances, while South Africa had up to four separate projects ongoing with different promoters across three locations.
- The Bugesera circuit, designed by former F1 driver Alex Wurz 25 miles south of Kigali, will be roughly 6km long with 17 corners and nearly 200m of elevation change, styled after Spa-Francorchamps, Suzuka and Mugello.
- The Democratic Republic of Congo has brought an International Court of Justice case accusing Rwanda of breaching multiple international treaties covering genocide prevention, racial discrimination, women's rights and torture.
- Felix Jakens of Amnesty International UK said Rwanda is "buying into the world's biggest sports to polish its image and deflect from its appalling human rights record," and urged F1 to use its influence to push for change.
- President Paul Kagame said the race would deliver "jobs, skills, tourism and new business," with funding drawn from a newly established public-private development fund supporting Rwanda's wider £3.5bn private investment plan.
Why it matters: F1 gains entry to an untapped 100-million-fan African market via a 10-year Rwandan Grand Prix deal starting in the early 2030s — but with the DRC's ICJ case accusing Rwanda of breaching treaties on genocide prevention and torture already active, the governing body must defend the human rights commitments written into its own charter.
