Arctic Phytoplankton Boom Is Starving Itself of

- Phytoplankton blooms in the Chukchi Sea are consuming nearly all the nitrate carried by Pacific water through the Bering Strait, depriving other parts of the Arctic of a nutrient essential to growth, according to research from the University of Edinburgh.
- Nitrate levels in the Fram Strait have fallen sharply since 2009, coinciding with a regime shift toward lower sea ice extent, based on icebreaker measurements collected from 1998 to 2023.
- Diatoms, the large algae that thrive on nitrate, have ceased to dominate the Fram Strait and have been replaced by smaller microplankton that source nitrogen from ammonium — adding extra links to the food chain and siphoning energy away from fish, seals and polar bears.
- Raja Ganeshram and colleagues, including Marta Santos-García, argue the Arctic ecosystem has crossed a tipping point: because sea ice is unlikely to recover, the nitrate loss is effectively permanent.
- Jean-Éric Tremblay of Laval University, who was not involved in the study, said the results mean "the Arctic Ocean is not going to become the oasis of the future" — rising phytoplankton production removes nitrate and ultimately reduces productivity downstream.
- The altered nutrient flow into the north Atlantic could change phytoplankton composition there as well, with possible knock-on effects for commercial fishing, the researchers warn.
Why it matters: The finding inverts the prevailing narrative that a warming, ice-free Arctic would become more biologically productive — instead, a nutrient-driven feedback loop is collapsing the base of the regional food web. For Inuit communities reliant on Arctic marine hunting and for commercial fisheries in the north Atlantic, a structurally longer, less efficient food chain could mean less harvestable biomass, a shift documented across 25 years of Fram Strait icebreaker data.
