- A coalition of music industry and artists' groups introduced two voluntary labels — "AI-Generated" and "AI-Assisted" — for sound recordings using generative AI, designed for adoption by streaming services, distributors, and others.
- The RIAA, IFPI, the Recording Academy (Grammys), SAG-AFTRA, and the Human Artistry Campaign are backing the initiative, alongside indie groups including the American Association of Independent Music, Worldwide Independent Network, and IMPALA.
- The "AI-Generated" icon (white "AI" on black) flags recordings where generative AI created the entirety or primary portion, such as lead vocals or key instruments; the "AI-Assisted" icon (black "ai" on white) flags works substantially made by humans with AI used for some expressive elements.
- Deezer reported that AI-generated tracks made up 44% of all new music on its platform, and Apple Music said more than one-third of its tracks are "100% AI" — the data points the coalition cited to justify the rollout.
- The current labels do not cover AI use in lyrics, composition, music videos, or cover art — a notable gap in the scope of the rollout.
- IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley and RIAA chairman/CEO Mitch Glazier said in a joint statement that "fans want to know whether and how generative AI has been used," positioning the labels as a transparency tool that will expand as adoption grows.
Why it matters: With Deezer reporting 44% of new tracks are AI-generated and Apple Music saying over a third are "100% AI," the industry's biggest labels and unions are conceding that synthetic content has already flooded streaming platforms — making listener-facing disclosure a commercial necessity, not a philosophical stance. Because adoption is voluntary and the current icons exclude lyrics, videos, and cover art, platforms and rightsholders — not regulators — get to decide how transparently AI is disclosed to fans.
