Volkswagen’s EV van makes a surprise comeback in the US as the ID.4 goes on hiatus

- Volkswagen sold 1,249 ID. Buzz models in Q2 2026, up 121% from 564 units a year earlier, with the electric minibus returning as a 2027 model after the automaker skipped the 2026 model year.
- ID.4 sales dropped 6% to 1,867 units in Q2, and VW ended production at its Chattanooga, TN plant in April to retool for higher-volume gas-powered SUVs like the Atlas.
- VW introduced the 2027 ID. Buzz in April with a new Tourer variant built for overnight camping trips; updated models aren't expected to begin arriving at dealerships until next month.
- VW confirmed the ID.4 will be replaced by the ID. Tiguan under a new naming system, expected to debut by the end of 2026 at the Emden, Germany plant with the return of physical buttons and improved range/charging from recent battery and drive updates.
- Volkswagen Group's total US EV sales fell 49% to 5,800 units in Q2, with first-half 2026 EV sales down 68.8% to 9,800 units — Europe was the only market where the group posted higher Q2 EV sales than in 2025.
- VW has received over 54,000 orders for next-generation entry-level EVs (ID. Polo, ID. Cross, and ID. Tiguan) to compete with BYD and others, while China EV sales are down 48% year-to-date.
Why it matters: The ID. Buzz rebound is a bright spot inside a 68.8% first-half collapse in VW Group's US EV volume — and the 54,000 pre-orders for the ID. Polo, ID. Cross, and ID. Tiguan are the bet to replace the ID.4's lost output before BYD and other Chinese competitors close the gap further.
