- Wizards of the Coast announced Star Wars and World of Warcraft-themed Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying games during Gen Con 2026 on Thursday, expanding beyond its core fantasy catalog.
- The World of Warcraft book, built in collaboration with Blizzard, launches Nov. 17 and lets players 'roll for Azeroth,' recreating mains or rolling alts across zones, dungeons, and foes spanning more than 20 years of franchise history.
- An Icecrown Citadel Map Pack ships alongside the WoW title, offering poster maps and tokens usable with a digital adventure that raises characters four levels.
- The WoW release is the first 'Universes Beyond' D&D product, a new tabletop line of outside-licensed IP modeled after Magic: The Gathering's existing Universes Beyond collections.
- Star Wars D&D arrives in 2027, set during 'the Season of Rebellion,' as the next Universes Beyond edition.
- Gen Con also brought a D&D Icons creative initiative reuniting Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Luke Gygax, and RA Salvatore with settings like Dragonlance, plus the return of Dark Sun, a new D&D Beyond mobile experience, and Theo Solomon joining the actual-play series 'Dungeon Masters' for Campaign 3.
Why it matters: Wizards of the Coast is transplanting Magic: The Gathering's Universes Beyond formula — outside IP rather than original settings — into its flagship D&D brand, giving the company two major tentpole releases in successive years (Nov. 17 for WoW, 2027 for Star Wars). With D&D Icons bringing legacy creators back to classic settings like Dragonlance, the company is hedging licensed crossover appeal against a nostalgic core-audience push at the same Gen Con reveal.
