Why it matters: Nvidia is committing $4 billion to lock in supply of optical components from two of the few photonics suppliers capable of scaling to hyperscaler demand, with multibillion-dollar purchase commitments that effectively pre-purchase future manufacturing capacity. For Lumentum and Coherent, those commitments give them capital certainty to expand R&D and production. For Nvidia, the move hedges against the bandwidth bottleneck that agentic AI workloads are creating between GPUs inside data centers.
