SETI Updates Alien Signal Verification Protocols

- Dr Rebecca Charbonneau of the SETI Institute cited the 1965 CTA-102 incident — a mishandled signal detection that triggered a global media frenzy — and the COVID pandemic as reminders of what happens without a communication framework.
- Garrett drew a line on emotional stakes by distance: a signal from thousands of light years away would suggest an older, surviving civilization and could feel "uplifting," while a signal "just outside the solar system" would be "quite scary."
