- Emma Raducanu withdrew from this year's US Open at Flushing Meadows (starting 23 August) after consulting her medical team about a right lower-leg stress fracture picked up during the grass-court season, having only recently returned to court in a protective boot.
- Raducanu also made a late decision to pull out of Wimbledon, extending an absence that now stretches back to her Queen's Club run in June — her first final since winning the 2021 US Open.
- Andrew Richardson, the coach who guided Raducanu to her 2021 US Open title, was rehired ahead of the clay-court season, but the pair's on-court time together has been limited by her ongoing physical issues.
- Raducanu missed two and a half months with a post-viral illness after falling unwell in early February, and a separate foot injury had already severely disrupted her pre-season training.
- Raducanu won her first US Open matches last summer since her shock 2021 title run, but the past 12 months have been marked by persistent physical setbacks limiting her schedule.
Why it matters: The withdrawal ends Raducanu's 2024 Grand Slam season prematurely and extends a frustrating 12-month stretch in which injury and illness have repeatedly interrupted her comeback — meaning the former US Open champion will have played only a handful of events this year and enters 2025 still rebuilding match fitness rather than building ranking points.
